Getting video, data and control signals through an underwater camera housing requires more than an ordinary connector. A reliable system needs a properly matched bulkhead interface, a suitable external cable and careful sealing at the housing wall. Dive And See (DNC) has developed underwater connectivity solutions for camera housings, marine inspection and research applications.
Why underwater bulkhead connectors matter
A bulkhead connector provides an electrical or signal connection through the wall of a sealed enclosure. The connection must be designed for the housing's mounting geometry, pressure environment and cable requirements. Connector choice also affects serviceability: a detachable external cable can be easier to replace or transport than a permanently attached assembly.
Underwater Ethernet connectors and cables
Ethernet is useful when an underwater system needs network communication, remote monitoring or IP camera connectivity. A typical design combines an Ethernet-capable bulkhead connection with a properly terminated external cable. Depending on the equipment, power may be delivered separately or through a compatible Power over Ethernet (PoE) arrangement.

Before ordering, confirm the housing thread and wall thickness, Ethernet pinout, cable length, required data rate, power needs and operating depth. A standard RJ45 plug by itself is not a waterproof external connection.
Underwater USB bulkhead connectors
USB bulkhead connections can support camera control, data communication or power, depending on the connected devices and the specific assembly. The connector shape alone does not establish supported USB speed, power delivery or maximum cable length.

For a modern design, verify the exact USB interface, the camera's requirements and the intended cable length. Long-distance USB applications may require a purpose-built extension system rather than a passive cable.
Applications for underwater connectivity
- Underwater camera housings: route signals and power through a sealed enclosure.
- Marine and hull inspection: connect cameras to surface monitoring or recording equipment.
- Research and observation: build serviceable connections for instrument and camera deployments.
- ROV and remote systems: support networked devices and control interfaces where compatible.
How to choose a bulkhead connector
- Identify the housing's thread size, mounting space and sealing surface.
- Confirm the required signal standard: Ethernet, USB, SDI or another interface.
- Specify cable length, external termination and any power requirements.
- Check the complete assembly's depth rating and installation instructions.
- Protect the cable from pulling loads; do not suspend equipment by the connector.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use an ordinary RJ45 connector underwater?
No. A standard exposed RJ45 connection is not designed to provide a pressure-rated underwater seal. Use a suitable waterproof connection and housing pass-through assembly.
Does every underwater Ethernet connector support PoE?
Not necessarily. PoE compatibility depends on the full connector and cable assembly, conductor configuration and the connected equipment. Confirm the requirements before ordering.
Will a USB bulkhead connector work with any camera?
Compatibility depends on connector type, wiring, supported functions and the camera's interface. Check these details for the exact camera and housing.
